How long does CEIG approval take?

What is a Single Line Diagram?
An SLD is a simplified technical representation of an electrical distribution system showing major equipment, incoming and outgoing feeders, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, metering and other important electrical connections.
Does a transformer require electrical approval?
Transformer installations may be subject to statutory inspection/approval requirements depending on voltage level, installation configuration and applicable electrical safety provisions.
How do I apply for transformer approval?
The process normally involves submission of the prescribed technical documents relating to the transformer and associated HT/LT installation, protection system, earthing, test reports and installation details, followed by inspection/verification wherever applicable.
Does a DG set require electrical approval?
Depending on capacity, voltage and installation arrangement, DG installations may fall under applicable electrical-safety inspection and approval requirements. The installation should be assessed before commissioning.
Electrical Safety
Why is electrical earthing important?
Earthing provides a controlled path for fault current and helps protective devices operate correctly. Proper earthing reduces risks of electric shock, equipment damage and electrical fire.
How often should earthing be tested?
Testing frequency should be determined according to the type of installation, operating conditions, statutory requirements and preventive-maintenance programme. Critical installations may require more frequent testing.
What is insulation resistance testing?
Insulation resistance testing evaluates the condition of insulation between conductors and earth or between conductors and can help identify deterioration, moisture ingress and insulation defects.
What is transformer oil BDV testing?
Breakdown Voltage testing assesses the dielectric strength of insulating oil and is commonly used as one indicator of transformer oil condition.
What is thermography in an electrical audit?
Infrared thermography identifies abnormal temperature patterns in electrical equipment and can help detect loose connections, overloaded components, unbalanced loading and developing equipment faults.
Why is lightning protection important for solar plants?
Solar arrays and associated electrical equipment can be exposed to lightning and surge risks. Appropriate lightning and surge protection should therefore form part of the overall system design based on applicable standards and risk assessment.

What is sanctioned load?
Sanctioned load is the electrical load approved for a consumer's connection under the applicable supply conditions.
What is connected load?
Connected load generally represents the aggregate rated load of electrical equipment connected or capable of being connected at the premises, determined in accordance with applicable supply provisions.
When is load enhancement required?
Load enhancement may be required when the consumer's proposed electrical demand or installation exceeds the presently sanctioned parameters of the connection, subject to the applicable supply and regulatory framework.
Can an industrial consumer increase its sanctioned load?
Yes. Industrial consumers can apply for load enhancement subject to technical feasibility, infrastructure requirements, applicable charges, documentation and other conditions.
Can the name on an electricity connection be changed?
Yes, subject to the applicable procedure and supporting documents establishing ownership, occupancy, succession or other permitted basis for transfer.
What can a consumer do if an electricity complaint is not resolved?
The electricity regulatory framework provides a structured grievance-redressal mechanism. Escalation may proceed through the prescribed consumer grievance forum and subsequently the Electricity Ombudsman.
Are electricity consumers entitled to standards of service?
Yes. Distribution licensees are subject to applicable standards of performance and supply-code requirements. Rajasthan has dedicated Standards of Performance regulations as well as the Electricity Supply Code.
Energy Audits
What is an energy audit?
An energy audit systematically examines how energy is consumed within a facility and identifies opportunities for improving efficiency, reducing waste and controlling energy costs.
What is the difference between an electrical safety audit and an energy audit?
An electrical safety audit focuses on hazards, system condition, protection, statutory compliance and electrical risk. An energy audit focuses on energy consumption, efficiency, losses and potential energy-saving measures.
How long does an energy audit take?
The duration depends on facility size, process complexity, available historical data, measurements required and the scope of the audit. Avoid promising a universal timeframe before the facility and scope have been assessed.
What equipment is normally examined during an energy audit?
Depending on the facility, an audit may cover transformers, motors, pumps, compressors, HVAC systems, lighting, DG sets, process equipment, power factor, electrical demand and other significant energy-consuming systems.
What is power factor?
Power factor indicates how effectively electrical power is being converted into useful work. Poor power factor can increase current, losses and system loading and may have commercial implications depending on the applicable tariff.
What are harmonics?
Harmonics are waveform distortions generally produced by non-linear electrical loads such as variable-frequency drives, UPS systems, electronic power supplies and power-electronic converters.
Net Metering & Grid Connection
What is net metering?
Net metering is a billing arrangement for an eligible grid-connected renewable-energy system under which electricity imported from and exported to the distribution network is measured and accounted for according to the applicable regulations and tariff framework.
What is gross metering?
Under gross metering, electricity generated by the renewable-energy system is exported and accounted for separately rather than being adjusted against the consumer's consumption in the same manner as net metering.
What is grid synchronization?
Grid synchronization is the process of connecting a generating system to the distribution network while satisfying required voltage, frequency, phase, protection and other technical conditions.
Can I connect a solar plant directly to the grid?
A grid-connected solar installation must satisfy the applicable connectivity, metering, protection, safety and commissioning requirements before regular parallel operation.
What is a net meter?
A net meter is capable of recording electricity flow required for accounting of import and export under the applicable metering arrangement.
What is solar commissioning?
Commissioning is the stage at which the completed solar installation is verified for conformity with applicable technical, safety, metering and connectivity requirements before regular operation.
Why can solar synchronization get delayed?
Typical causes include incomplete documentation, meter-related requirements, discrepancies between approved and installed systems, protection or earthing deficiencies, pending inspection observations, connectivity issues or other technical/non-compliance matters.
Are Rajasthan's rooftop solar rules still based only on the 2021 regulations?
No. The 2021 Grid Interactive Distributed Renewable Energy Generating Systems Regulations remain an important baseline, but subsequent amendments were issued in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Current projects should therefore be assessed against the regulations as amended.
PM Surya Ghar
What is PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana?
It is the Government of India's residential rooftop solar programme intended to encourage households to install rooftop solar systems and receive eligible Central Financial Assistance subject to scheme conditions.
Who can receive rooftop solar subsidy?
Central Financial Assistance under PM Surya Ghar is principally intended for eligible residential consumers. Eligibility, system requirements and application conditions should be checked against the prevailing scheme guidelines at the time of application.
Is subsidy available for commercial and industrial rooftop solar plants?
The residential CFA under PM Surya Ghar should not be confused with commercial or industrial solar incentives. Commercial and industrial projects generally require evaluation under the applicable tariff, regulatory, tax and renewable-energy framework.
Do I have to use a registered vendor?
Consumers seeking benefits under the applicable residential rooftop solar programme should follow the vendor-selection and installation requirements prescribed through the scheme's official mechanism.
Who selects the rooftop solar vendor?
Under the consumer-driven rooftop solar framework, the consumer selects the vendor in accordance with the applicable scheme and portal requirements.
What happens after the solar installation is completed?
The installation generally proceeds through the prescribed completion, inspection/verification, metering and commissioning process. Subsidy/CFA processing, where applicable, follows successful completion of the required scheme formalities.
Can a solar application also involve load enhancement?
In Rajasthan's PM Surya Ghar implementation guidance, where the applied SPV capacity exceeds the sanctioned load, the solar application can be treated as the request for corresponding load extension rather than requiring a separate load-extension application, subject to the applicable conditions.
Renewable Energy
What is Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)?
BESS stores electrical energy in batteries for later use. Applications can include peak management, renewable-energy integration, backup support, energy shifting and grid services.
Is battery storage now specifically regulated in Rajasthan?
Yes. Rajasthan's regulatory framework has continued to evolve, and RERC lists dedicated Battery Energy Storage Systems Regulations, 2026 among its current regulations.
What is Green Energy Open Access?
Green Energy Open Access provides an applicable regulatory mechanism through which eligible consumers can procure renewable electricity through open access, subject to eligibility, network availability, charges and regulatory conditions.
What is Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO)?
RPO is a regulatory obligation requiring specified obligated entities to meet prescribed portions of their electricity consumption/procurement from renewable sources in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework.
Why is quality important in rooftop solar installations?
Poor design, unsuitable components, inadequate workmanship, weak earthing/protection and insufficient testing can affect generation, equipment life and electrical safety.
Solar & Rooftop Solar
What is a rooftop solar system?
A rooftop solar photovoltaic system generates electricity from solar panels installed on residential, commercial, industrial or institutional rooftops. Depending on the system configuration, the generated electricity may be consumed at the premises, exported to the grid or stored in batteries.
What is the difference between on-grid, off-grid and hybrid solar?
An on-grid system operates in synchronization with the electricity grid. An off-grid system operates independently and normally requires battery storage. A hybrid system combines grid connectivity with battery storage and suitable control equipment.
How much rooftop area is required for a solar plant?
The area depends on module wattage, module dimensions, orientation, spacing, roof obstructions and system design. A site survey should therefore be carried out before finalizing plant capacity.
How much electricity will a solar plant generate?
Generation depends on installed capacity, solar irradiation, orientation, tilt, shading, temperature, module efficiency, inverter efficiency, system losses and maintenance. Actual generation should therefore be estimated using site-specific conditions rather than a fixed units-per-kW figure.
Can rooftop solar be installed on an existing electricity connection?
Yes, subject to the applicable technical requirements, sanctioned load/connection parameters, available network capacity and prevailing distributed renewable-energy regulations.
What is a solar inverter?
A solar inverter converts DC electricity generated by photovoltaic modules into AC electricity suitable for use by electrical loads and, in a grid-connected installation, synchronization with the electricity network.
Can inverter capacity be different from solar PV module capacity?
The inverter and PV array need not always have identical nameplate capacities. The permitted configuration depends on applicable technical and regulatory requirements.
What is a bifacial solar module?
A bifacial module can generate electricity from solar radiation received on both its front and rear surfaces. Actual rear-side gain depends significantly on mounting height, surface reflectivity, spacing and installation design.
Does a rooftop solar plant require maintenance?
Yes. Periodic module cleaning, visual inspection, electrical testing, earthing inspection, protection-system checks, inverter monitoring and preventive maintenance help maintain safety and performance.
